NASA's Work With Contractors Is a Focus of the Columbia Investigation. The independent panel investigating the loss of the shuttle is looking at how strictly the space agency supervised its contractors and their work standards. By Edward Wong. [New York Times: Science]
Just remember, beancounters never produce good science. They just produce cost reductions, without real regard to safety in many cases. Doing it cheaper is better than doing it right. Normally you could just go to different manufacturer. It is one of the difficulties with privitization in the space program, since there really is no other competitor around to keep the major contractors honest. They'll still get the business, no matter what they do or who they fool. As Feynman said, science can not be fooled. 10:40:37 AM

Congress Clings to a Pager Made in Canada. American lawmakers have an affinity for Canadian BlackBerrys, the popular e-mail devices made by a Waterloo, Ontario-based company. By Jeffrey Selingo. [New York Times: Science]
Maybe something will be done on patents when it gores a Congressman's ox. At the moment, they are all using a device that has been shown in court to violate the patents held by another. Instead of doing what we are all told to do (i.e. stop using such a device) they are using everything in theor powers to keep the illegal devie. I am sure that at some point they will try to pass specific legislation allowing only them to use the device 9:31:32 AM
