Were the Founding Fathers Christians?
This stupid orgy of holiness around the pledge has a lot of people making stupid proclamations about how the founding fathers were supposedly Christians. Here's another point of view. Here's a quote from James Madison, "father of the constitution:"
"Religious bondage shackles and debilitates the mind and unfits it for every noble enterprise." "During almost fifteen centuries has the legal establishment of Christianity been on trial. What have been its fruits? More or less in all places, pride and indolence in the Clergy, ignorance and servility in the laity, in both, superstition, bigotry and persecution."
It's hard to imagine the amount of hatred that would be directed against any politician saying anything like that today.
And on a similar topic, people have said that next we would be removing "In God We Trust," from our money. Of course, that motto on the money is even newer than "under God" in the Pledge! Like the change to the Pledge, it was added as part of the Red Scare in 1956.
