The right man for the job His county -- and his country -- cried out for him. And Bruce Springsteen came through. (Salon)
Most of Salon's music criticism is pretentious bullshit, but Joyce Millman does a damn fine job here.
But while the rest of the universe is drooling and fumbling over itself about The Rising, those in the know are hanging out at LITTLE STEVEN'S UNDERGROUND GARAGE. [michael britten's Loftware]
Joyce is right: Springsteen succeeds where most anyone else would have failed. The album holds up (at least after 5 days of pretty heavy rotation in my house) well, is real and not contrived. The songs get under your skin in a good way.
Since there are no radio stations in the bay area that carry Little Steven's show, it's great that it's on the web. And you can go back and start at the beginning. Steve gets close to the heart of rock on these shows.
