Ready for Jaguar

I spent last night backing up my old iMac getting ready for Jaguar. I'm heading off to the Berkeley Farmer's Market in a few minutes, and will pop around the corner and pick the OS up. Looking forward to it. My iMac has been feeling flaky tome lately, so I've backed it up to another machine on the network, and will reformat the disk on install.

The Gospel According to Biff

Just read Christopher Moore's "Biff: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal." It's a memoir of Jesus' (called Joshua in the book, as Jesus is a Greek version of Joshua) life, with a lot about the missing years before he turned 30. There's a lot of comedy -- "When I first met Joshua he was resurrecting lizards in town square," etc. -- but it's a serious book. Biff and Joshua head to the East in search of the three wise men, and learn Eastern religions from them, answering the question "what if Jesus knew Karate." The one problem is that the voices of the characters seem to be about the same. Jesus and Biff talk the same way, as does Mary of Magdala, who is otherwise well drawn. His portrayal of life in that place and time feels real to me. Finally, the theology of the book is kind of watered down. Joshua's theology doesn't seem very radical to me, and it feels like the author has made it kind of bland. Still and all, a worthy read.
