Friedman on Iraq
THE BUSH STRATEGY ON IRAQ:. Here is Thomas Friedman's take, much worth reading. [The Volokh Conspiracy]
The last paragraph sums it up quite nicely:
So here's how I feel: I feel as if the president is presenting us with a beautiful carved mahogany table — a big, bold, gutsy vision. But if you look underneath, you discover that this table has only one leg. His bold vision on Iraq is not supported by boldness in other areas. And so I am terribly worried that Mr. Bush has told us the right thing to do, but won't be able to do it right.
It's almost impossible, given everything: his record of lies on most issues, his record of saying one thing and doing another, his record of shifting reasons for this war, his previous positions on nation buildinng, his disrespect for the opinions and well-being of anyone not rich, etc. etc., to believe that Bush can do it right. Getting rid of Saddam might be the right thing to do, but if it is, why have we failed to convince so much of the world that it's the right thing to do? Since war seems foreordained in Bush's mind, I certainly hope he's able to do it right, but have nearly no confidence that he will.
