Waiting for Helen Thomas to be called on was one thing that kept me watching for as long as I did (I had a meeting to go to). But it was clear soon that this whole thing was pretty scripted; Bush got softballs from everyone he did call on, ignored those who would ask tough questions, and for the moderately challenging questions he did get, he pulled out packaged answers to different questions. No wonder he never has press conferences.

The Wall Street Journal is actually chortling over this, pointing out that none of the Democrats actually running come out ahead of Bush. But that just means people are looking for a candidate. My guess is that out of all these there are some pretty reasonable people who can beat Bush. That is, if Bush allows an election in 2004.
