Colin Powell, February 24, 2001: Hussein has no significant WMD capability. On February 24, 2001, Colin Powell did not view Saddam Hussein's weapons capabilities as a threat to his neighbors in the region, let alone the United States. Still, less than two years later, the US government would claim that Iraq's WMD threat was great enough to justify a unilateral invasion. This was revealed today by Salon's Joe Conason, writing about an Australian investigative reporter John Pilger who has uncovered a video tape of Colin Powell from that time, clearly stating that Saddam Hussein has "not developed any significant capability with respect to weapons of mass destruction. He is unable to project conventional power against his neighbors." [kuro5hin.org]
