Open Range
I saw Open Range, the Kevin Costner/Robert Duvall oater last night;
what a disappointment. The first part of the movie consists of Costner
and Duvall giving this kid a lot of crap because he's not a 'real man.'
Then there's a pretty good chunk where they do battle with the bad
guys. Michael Gambon is terrific as the main bad guy, but beyond him
there are just too many of them for you to really work up a good hate.
You know it's bad when they have to make the bad guys kill a dog to get
you hate them. The gunfight is good, but then the movie ends with three
repetitive, senseless scenes between Costner and Annette Bening that
just leave a really bad taste in your mouth. This movie is all about telling and not enough about showing. It tells you
what a real he-man Costner is instead of showing you his
character. Though I did enjoy the middle of it, and the scenery
is good, and Duvall is fun to watch (though here, he's reprising Gus
from Lonesome Dove too much, and the character isn't anywhere near as
interesting), and it does have a dirty, accurate feel, in the end it
was really a waste of time.
