One of the noblest and most absurd undertakings ever attempted by a state Unmasking the Writers of the W.P.A..  Created in 1935, the Federal Writers' Project gave rise to a generation of novelists, including John Cheever, Saul Bellow, Ralph Ellison and Zora Neale Hurston.
