28 Days Later
Here's John Shirley's review of 28 Days Later, which I saw the other night. Shirley is right about some things -- it's much better than most of the horror dreck that comes out of Hollywood. But it's not really a very good movie. It's your basic end-of-the-world-zombie movie, a la The Omega Man. I haven't seen that movie in decades, but in memory it seemed much scarier than this one, and of course this isn't a patch on Night of the Living Dead. The holes in the story are too big, I think, the scares don't come when you expect them to (and worse, they don't come when you don't expect them too, either). It was close to being a good scary movie, but didn't make it.

Wired News: One ISP Refuses to Yield. Pac Bell claims that more than 200 subpoenas seeking file-sharers' e-mail addresses were issued from the wrong jurisdiction. And the recording industry's demand for information on multiple file-sharers cannot be grouped under one subpoena, and that the demands themselves are overly broad, Pac Bell said. [Tomalak's Realm]
Well, I never thought I'd hear myself saying this, but: Good for Pac Bell!

Too Many Astronauts
James Oberg argues persuasivly that NASA has too many astronauts, seriously and adversely affecting the organization's culture.
The biggest problem this expensive workforce causes is the dominance in the agency of "astronaut think." Former astronauts make their way into high-level management positions throughout NASA. There they form what cynics call "the astronaut mafia," a buddy system that imposes the astronauts' will on managers.
