Honesty Not a Virtue for Politicians
Stephen Den Beste writes in the Wall Street Journal today that the real reason we're in Iraq is to "create a secularized, liberated, cosmpolitan society in a core Arab Nation." And to that end, lying about it is OK. "Honesty and plain speaking are not virtues for politicians and diplomats. If either Mr. Bush or Mr. Blair had said what I did, it would have hit the fan big-time." So it's OK to lie to keep "it" from hitting the fan? So it's OK to lie to get us into a war we might not want to be in? But not OK to lie to, say, prevent your wife from finding out about adultery? Or maybe it's OK for Republicans to lie but not Democrats? What lies are OK according to the Journal? How can a democracy exist if it's fine for our leaders to lie to us to get us to accept actions we might not accept otherwise?
