SQLyog
SQLyog is a really great query and
management tool for mySQL. Its name is strange and unfortunate, even
though there's a good reason for it. A few months ago, I downloaded
almost every mySQL tool I could find, but none came close to the
functionality I was used to from Microsoft's Query Analyzer. Most
include nice interfaces to help you manage the server, and for creating
databases and tables. But most ignore the task you perform most often:
write and run queries. Lots of them have nice little helper dialogs for
running the queries, but typically they'll leave little room for the
results or help you debug complicated queries. Its this last feature
that makes SQLyog so attractive to me: it doesn't get in the way, and
doesn't try to "help" you too much with your queries. And it adheres
very faithfully to the Query Analyzer interface, so using it is a
no-brainer for me. The developers recently changed the product from a
free one to costing $49, which predictably generated a lot of whining
on their website. Myself, I paid for it without any qualms. The
developers plan on bringing out a Mac version soon, and I'll grab that
one as soon as it comes out. If you're working with mySQL, and
especially if you're used to SQL Server's Query Analyzer, it's highly
recommended.

I just heard on the radio that Bobby Bonds, Barry's dad, died. Condolences to Barry and the rest of the family.

Mars
Don't wait till Wednesday to get out to see Mars. It's a glorious sight
now, as it has been for the past couple of weeks and will continue to
be for a few weeks after that. Plus, over the next couple weeks it'll
be "easier" to see, since it'll be visible earlier in the evenings. If
you miss it Wednesday, don't let that stop you from seeing it later.
The best way to appreciate it is to develop a good relationship with it
during this apparition.
My neighbor Ken and I took my Coulter 8" Dobsonian up to the Lawrence
Hall of Science plaza last night. Though there were a few too many
lights, and my mirror needs colllimation, the seeing was still good. We
got to spend a lot of time looking at the thing -- the polar cap was
frequently clear, as were other markings. It's a wonderful sight; don't
miss it.
