Nutjob of the day: "
This is apropos of nothing at all, but some people are fucking nuts:
Michael Spearman and Akima Carolina had a little argument because Michael had forgotten his Bible. Michael thought that his girlfriend, who was driving, would turn around and go back home so he could pick up that Bible. However, for whatever reason Akima refused to do it. Michael then threatened to kill Akima and her sister who was also in the vehicle with them. When Akima continued to refuse to return home, Michael grabbed and jerked the steering wheel. This caused their GMC Denali to shoot across several lanes of traffic with Akima losing control and then it rolled several times. By the time, the police had arrived Akima and Michael had both taken off leaving the sister behind who was uninjured. Who needs their Bible so bad they will threaten murder for it, crash their car, and then leave their own sister in the wreckage while they abandon the scene on foot?
I'm sure The General would approve.

The current regime in Washington thinks it's OK to spend your tax dollars creating fake news propaganda to shore up support for its policies. I don't. Perhaps this petition will help, though it doesn't seem too likely.

Is this what the Catholic Church is? An institution that shields pedophiles but won't give a man a funeral because he owns gay bars? It makes me ashamed to ever have been a part of that outfit. It's hard to imagine that any god worth worshipping would condone this, or that the Jesus of the gospels who said "judge not lest you be judged" would ever condone it.

Joan Ryan writes a sensible, smart article on steroids and kids. I was part of a group that surveyed my local high school. The results (PDF) showed that alcohol use was not insignificant: about 10% of the kids said they were drinking frequently (weekly or more). Drinking and driving was even more alarming: nearly a quarter of the kids reported riding in a car with someone under the influence! Only 7 kids out of the 458 who answered our survey reported every taking steroids. It doesn't take much looking to see what's the bigger problem. You can't watch a sportscast on TV without seeing dozens of ads promoting beer drinking. Instead, we get that sanctimony fest we saw yesterday in Washington, and wingnuts worrying about a tit or two on TV. It's an old saw, but watch out whenever you hear "but what about the children." Read Joan Ryan's article, it's a good one.
The 1,400 college students who die each year from alcohol-related injuries translates to three or four students every single day. Try to find any reputable research that says steroids has killed a single child. There isn't any. Several suicides have been linked to steroid use, but as tragic as they are, they do not constitute a public health crisis. The numbers of kids using steroids in the U.S. barely registers on the scale of teen drug use. In a 1999 study by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2.7 percent of 8th- and 10th-graders and 2.9 percent of 12th-graders had taken steroids. By contrast, 80 percent of high school seniors have used alcohol; 32 percent say they had been drunk in the last month. About 3 million teens are said to be alcoholics.
These guys yesterday made me sick. They're after headlines and votes, not helping the kids.

Terri Schiavo to testify before Congress: "
Yes, you read right. Terri Schiavo will be subpoenaed to testify before Congress. [NYT permalink]
Bill Frist, Republican of Tennessee and the Senate majority leader, issued a statement saying that the woman, Terri Schiavo, and her husband, Michael, were being invited to testify in a Congressional inquiry into the matter later this month.
The statement pointed out that Federal law protects witnesses called before Congress 'from anyone who may obstruct or impede a witness's attendance or testimony.'
The maneuver is the latest step by lawmakers determined to keep Ms. Schiavo alive to prevent her feeding tube from being disconnected, scheduled for 1 p.m. today.
