Great sentence by Vladimir Nabokov, from a short piece on Chekhov quoted in this month's Atlantic:

Chekhov's intellectual was a man who combined the deepest human decency of which man is capable with an almost ridiculous inability to put his ideals and principles into action; a man devoted to moral beauty, the welfare of his people, the welfare of the universe, but unable in his private life to do anything useful; frittering away his provincial existence in a haze of utopian dreams; knowing exactly what is good, what is worthwhile living for, but at the same time sinking lower and lower in the mud of a humdrum existence, unhappy in love, hopelessly inefficient in everything -- a good man who cannot make good.

Eric Rudolph sentenced today; Silence from the Religious Right.

Why is it that when a heinous crime is committed, an act of terrorism on our own country but has a anti-abortion angle to it all the loud mouth Circus Clowns stay quiet?Rudolph says""What they did was participate in the murder of 50 children a week," he said, shackled at the ankles and wearing a red jail uniform. "Abortion is murder and because it is murder I believe deadly force is needed to stop it."

The wingnuts over at Lifenews.com said: "Eric Robert Rudolph was sentenced to life in prison on Monday for bombing an abortion business..."

These creationism junkies can't even utter the word abortion clinic. Hopefully they'll migrate to South Carolina as fast as they can.

... in Birmingham in 1998. Rudolph has no connection to the pro-life movement and also bombed the Atlanta Olympics and a gay nightclub to draw attention to his anti-government views.

He bombed a gay night club, and an abortion clinic; all based on the usual talking point hate speech that emanates from the radical religious right. Rudolph is like a card carrying member of their club. Did he get a 10% discount coupon booklet when he joined?
