A PRIEST PULLED: We really are in a new church. A priest who had differed from his own church's stance on a political matter - the Massachusetts state constitutional amendment to ban marriage rights for gays - was yanked from mass last Sunday, and replaced by a bishop who reprimanded him to his parishioners. Message: no political deviation allowed.

Steve: I don't know why Andrew Sullivan suggests that it's a new church. It sounds just like the old Catholic Church to me. I guess the real difference is these days they don't burn them. Maybe that's coming.

I met a woman who showed me this box of M&M's the size of a pack of cigarettes and she said that this is what W. and Condoleeza gave her when her relative was killed in Iraq--after the family portrait they gave her these M&M's with the national seal on the front of the box and this happy flag-toting yellow dancing M&M on the back and this is what they gave her. At first I think she's out of her mind, but she's not. This is what they gave her. Like free gift with you cosmetics purchase only it's just M&M's and your son brother uncle sister daughter is dead and the yellow M&M is dancing on the box and this is what they gave her.

Mars Exploration Program Analysis Group (MEPAG) Meeting "Who should attend? Participation is open to all scientists/engineers involved in Mars exploration, including international colleagues. Since this is a 'working' meeting, it is not open to members of the press, however, if there is interest we can make people available for interviews afterwards." Editor's earlier note: Once again NASA seeks to hide discussions about its Mars exploration program behind closed doors.

Steve: What could they possible be saying in there that they don't want us to know?

Science comes second as NASA makes lunar plans, Nature (subscription) "The current focus on hardware and site selection - engineering rather than science - worries some researchers. "My immediate reaction was: 'So what are they going to do on the Moon? Where's the beef?'" says Wesley Huntress, a former NASA science chief now with the Carnegie Institution of Washington."

Fascinating list. I'd imagine that the correlation between those who have cited these books and those who have read them is pretty weak. I also don't approve of the list compiler's misspelling of Finnegans Wake as "Finnegan's Wake." It should be a minor thing to get the titles right!
On the list, I've read items 1, 2, 3, 18, 23, and 39. Not very impressive.
