This piece on yesterday's Morning Edition on NPR talks about some of
the issues involved in repaying faith-based institutions (i.e.
churches) for their work in helping victims of the hurricanes. While
listening, I wondered why they are getting repaid at all! If I donate
to a church, or any other charitable organization, isn't the assumption
that I'm donating money for the purpose of having them help others? If
the government then gives them taxpayer money to make up for that,
aren't we in effect paying them twice? Once with the money I donate,
and once as a taxpayer? And it's even worse -- I take a tax deduction
for my donation, so the government is in effect paying me back again
for donating to the church! But the real point is why the government
should be repaying charitable organizations at all; isn't that what
they're there for?
