Rich Lowry

Greenwald:

National Review Editor Rich Lowry can't believe that John McCain, whom Lowry notes is a "war hero," was treated so disrespectfully when he spoke last night at the New School in Manhattan. Lowry finds it "incredible" and "amazing" that a war hero would be subjected to heckling when giving a highly controversial speech praising a highly unpopular war.

Apparently, heckling a war hero during a speech is a despicable act. But it's perfectly OK to
waive purple band-aids at decorated, wounded war veterans; and it's fine to accuse them of being soft on Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein even after they voted for the Iraq invasion and co-sponsored creation of the Homeland Security Department; and there is nothing wrong with going to the floor of the House and labeling a war hero a "coward" and then following it up with a year's worth of accusations that they are also a traitor. Calling into question a war hero's patriotism, their courage, the seriousness of their war wounds, and their allegiance to the United States is all perfectly fine. Just don't boo them at a speech....read on"

Lots of folks have picked this up. Kaye Grogan is insisting that everyone speak a language that she herself has a very modest understanding of.

Since when does a nation who taught their children to speak English fluently need to verify and have a vote in the Senate to make the language official? Only in America! . . .can these bizarre things keep happening.

English isn't the only thing she doesn't know much about, her grasp of history is tenuous at best.

It has taken 200 plus years for English to become America's official language. Maybe we missed something here. Did another boat come in behind the Mayflower with people speaking in unknown tongues?

Unknown to whom? Then there's the you're either fer us or agin us:

Hey! . . .you're either for the American culture or you're against it. You're either an American in every true sense of the word or somewhere in-between — which translates into troublemakers. And if you're going to be a United States Senator, House Representative or President of the United States — you should put the needs of the American citizens first. You can't straddle the fence on these issues, and expect the majority to keep electing you to serve them.

Under Two Flags
Mexican workers in Washington State farms>>>mopre

(Via GoodShit.)

Farmers in Washington -- growing apples, hops, cherries, pears, asparagus, raspberries -- are dependent on Mexican immigrants to get the crops picked at the lowest possible wages. When I was a lad, and one of the employers of migrants, the migrants were from Arsansas, Oklahoma, or hippies from all over the place. Times have changed. This is a great package of stories, well capturing the human elements in what's going on, and showing the effects on small towns in Washington and Mexico.
