Room for everyone - as long as you’re a white Republican:

BALTIMORE — Maryland Democrats on Thursday accused Republicans of launching a “conscious, premeditated” campaign of voter intimidation after a report described a handbook advising Republican poll watchers to challenge the credentials of any voters they suspect are fraudulent.

The handbook, obtained by The Washington Post for a story in Thursday’s editions, urges poll watchers to warn election judges that they could face jail time if they fail to act.

“Your most important duty as a poll worker is to challenge people who present themselves to vote but who are not authorized to vote,” the GOP handbook says.

Democrats said Republicans are engaging in tactics reminiscent of the pre-civil rights era. Rep. Elijah Cummings accused the GOP of “a conscious, premeditated plan of voter intimidation and voter suppression.”

One of the best things you can say about Tom Friedman is that he's smarter than David Brooks. But that's not saying much, and The Progressive has the quotes to prove it. From December 18, 2005:

At the very moment that American gloom-mongers are opting for panicked withdrawal, there's been a pileup of good news on Iraq: the improved training of Iraqi troops, the more effective counterinsurgency strategies, the booming Iraqi economy, the vastly improved White House communication strategy, the amazing confidence of the Iraqi people and, most of all, this glorious election.

Maybe he just lives in another universe.

"Software sucks, 80% of projects fail, and most developers are unhappy individuals. Why is this? My answer; complexity. Complexity is the single factor I would attribute poor software to. The more you have to do, the harder you make it on yourself, the way requirements seem to change, the worse the final result is; right? Software needs to be simple", says Chris Stewart.

We're running out of fish:

There will be virtually nothing left to fish from the seas by the middle of the century if current trends continue, according to a major scientific study.

Stocks have collapsed in nearly one-third of sea fisheries, and the rate of decline is accelerating.

Guess we better eat our fill now.

And yet, their use continues:

GENEVA (Reuters) - Civilians, a quarter of them children, make up almost all the victims of cluster bombs over the last three decades, a humanitarian agency said on Thursday.

In a study of 24 countries and regions, Handicap International said the controversial weapons, which scatter munitions over a wide area, had killed, wounded or maimed 11,044 people of whom 98 percent were civilians.

The under-reporting of victims in such places as Afghanistan, Iraq and Vietnam meant the real total could be almost 10 times higher, it said.
