Italy Writer Fallaci Provokes Anger [AP World News]

Oriana Fallaci is the author of an excellent article entitled On Jew-hatred in Europe. Unfortunately there's no longer an English translation available, but here's an excerpt:

I find it shameful and see in all this the rise of a new fascism, a new nazism. A fascism, a nazism, that much more grim and revolting because it is conducted and nourished by those who hypocritically pose as do-gooders, progressives, communists, pacifists, Catholics or rather Christians, and who have the gall to label a warmonger anyone like me who screams the truth.

It's hardly surprising that the person who wrote that would anger people at an "anti-globalization" meeting. The people who go to such meetings are the very people she wrote about!

source: Malaysia Star, 11/5, Kuala Lumpur]

IRAN AND MALAYSIA HAVE ANNOUNCED THAT THEY WILL INITIATE THE GOLD DINAR FOR THEIR BILATERAL TRADE.

Malaysian Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Mohd Shafie Salleh reported that top officials from Iran had expressed their intention to use the dinar in their business transaction with Malaysia under the Bilateral Payment Agreement.

The decision was taken at last month's Islamic Development conference in Africa, he said, which was attended by all the Finance Ministers of the Islamic nations. Mohd Shafie represented Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad at the conference.

Shafie said he would be submitting his detailed report to the Cabinet on Iran's offer. It was not discussed how the two nations will deal with the IMF rule against using gold as a reserve for trade.

The real surprise for me is the part about the "IMF rule against using gold." I'd never heard of anything like that before. I can't say it surprises me, though--it's consistent with IMF's habit of giving small countries orders on what to do with their economy that end up causing serious problems. Argentina comes to mind.

Is Mac OS X Slow? [Slashdot]

Yes, it is. When I was working on the OS X version of Norton Utilities, I would have a TiBook G4/500 running OS X sitting next to my Pismo G3/500 with MacOS 9.1. When you have Mac and OS X systems sitting right next to each other in front of you, the terrible performance of OS X is really noticeable.

Now the Republicans have to deliver, especially on the economy. [OpinionJournal]

With control of Congress, Republicans in Washington will now have to deliver or suffer the same fate two years from now. Trent Lott has to be a better Senate leader than he has been in the past. The unfinished Bush agenda is clear enough: approving judges, entitlement and perhaps tax reform, faith-based charitable choice and welfare reform, and above all a pro-growth economic agenda that includes tax cuts. The Bush majority finally exists, but Republicans will have to produce to make it enduring.

Realistically, the Republicans are going to continue demonstrating that they're even bigger socialists than the Democrats. After all, that's what happened after the 1994 "Republican Revolution"--government spending skyrocketed.

ADV Confirms Cable Anime Channel [Slashdot]

No mention of whether the channel would be showing dubbed or subtitled anime. I hope they'll show subtitles, but unfortunately I think it's more likely they will show dubs.
