The press totally missed the story about Bush's space initiative.  It is a corporate welfare effort for Raytheon and Boeing.  Nothing more, nor less.  Not a true breakthrough like a $1 b Xprize for a man/woman on the moon for a year. [John Robb's Weblog]

He makes an excellent point. Another billion dollars won't make any difference to bloated NASA budgets, but if it were a prize for a private competition I'd be willing to bet that a company like Scaled Composites would win it inside of ten years.

Earthquake feeds. We had a mini-earthquake (3.6) last night. Today I discover that the U.S. Geological Survey has RSS feeds for earthquakes. [inessential.com]

As a Californian, I like this idea.
