Hitler the Pagan. I'm reading Hitler and the Power of Aesthetics by Frederic Spotts, a book on fascism, art, and the state. Here's one passage I found interesting: "Despite his own non-belief, [Hitler] even admired Greek religion, and his entourage must have found... [LewRockwell.com Blog]

It sounds like Hitler didn't really know much about Greek mythology. Even a casual reading will reveal most Greek gods as being brutal sociopaths (with the notable exception of Athena, who is worshipped to this day in the guise of Saint Sofia). Comparing them to the Christian's god in this way is like saying that Charles Manson wasn't as bad as Hitler himself. Strictly speaking it's true, but it doesn't change the fact that they were both evil.

Dean Update.

Judith Steinberg may have brought the defrib pads with her from Vermont: One poll's showing Dean within 3 points of Kerry. Meanwhile, Declan McCullagh looks at Dean's fuzzy views on privacy.

[Hit & Run]

Fifteen months before Dean said he would seek the presidency, however, the former Vermont governor spoke at a conference in Pittsburgh co-sponsored by smart-card firm Wave Systems where he called for state drivers' licenses to be transformed into a kind of standardized national ID card for Americans.

Anyone who thinks that voting for Dean would change things should keep this in mind.

Walk softly, carry a big gun. Please bear with me. I am an Alaskan, and Alaskans, for better or worse, are given to looking down on the rest of the nation. We mean no offense; it is just in our nature, and because of our place on this Earth, which leads us to be confused from time to time when we visit the Lower 48.

I am puzzled now by the strange way people here are dealing with mountain lions - which is to say, letting them kill you.

Nature killing people is no big deal for Alaskans. That's the way things are in Alaska.

When you step out into it, you are at risk. If you are wise, you prepare for it. Alaska does not suffer fools. It eats them. [FirearmNews.com]

This article was originally printed (surprisingly) in the editorial section of the Los Angeles Times, and makes a good point about the absurdity of Californians allowing themselves to be killed by animals.
