Beta: fileSystem Upstream Driver. [Scripting News]
This is how I'm posting via WebDAV now. It's beta so we'll see how well it works. In playing with it, it seems to have problems with aliases, I'm not sure why. Regular directories and other mounts seem to work OK.

That worked, cool! I'm now able to post directly via WebDAV without using the localhost FTP hack that I had been using. The trouble was figuring out exactly what path to use.
I do most of my WebDAV access from the command line which puts my WebDAV mount at /Volumes/soaptech.org/radio. However, Radio wants an old style mac path which in my case is soaptech.org:radio:. You have to have the colon mix exactly right otherwise Radio just silently fails on the upstream.

Testing Radio file system upstreaming again. I think I have the incantations right now.

Wolfgang Meier has released version 0.7.1 of eXist.
Version 0.7.1 adds new features for fulltext-searching: There's now a
near-function for index-based queries on phrases and support for
regular expressions in search patterns. Some major bugs related to
namespace processing have been fixed and a problem in the storage
backend resulting in damaged database files has been solved.

Coursey Comments On Mac Experience [MacSlash: A daily dose of Macintosh News and Discussion]
So far, mostly good. I'm glad to see he really seems to be approaching things with an open mind. It's especially interesting to see the comment about how the Mac tools inspire you to create. I noticed the same thing when I first switched to the Mac. I even found my self attempting to create graphics, something I've always avoided. Sadly, inspiration doesn't necessarily mean talent, as my graphics efforts have revealed. I'm going to keep trying though.

XML-DBMS 2.0 reaches alpha. Ron Bourret announced the release of the first alpha of the Java version of XML-DBMS 2.0. [xmlhack]
It's good to see Ron moving forward with XML-DBMS. This is a good tool if you need to convert relational data to and from XML.

Intel, HP back Mono effort for open .Net [IDG InfoWorld]
I'm glad to see they're going away from the LGPL for the libraries. Some big commercial support behind this is also a very interesting turn of events. It also doesn't bode well for Java. The thing to watch now is IBM. If they start making some moves in this direction Java may actually be in trouble.
The beauty of Mono is that there is nothing that will prevent a port to OS X. The CLR might be difficult to port, but it shouldn't be impossible. If this happens, Cocoa bindings for C# and the .Net framework would be incredibly cool. Of course you can already do pretty much all the same things with Java, but it'd still be great to have another option.

Speed-bumpted Power Mac details [MacNN]
The software bundle is interesting. I'm glad to see bundled OmniOutliner and OmniGraffle, both great apps. What would be very cool is a bundled OmniWeb, guess the MS contract prevents that.

Apple brings Power Macs up to speed. The company's new top-of-the-line model could close the "gigahertz gap" with PCs. It also could help prevent Apple's new iMac from cannibalizing professional system sales. [CNET News.com: Personal Technology]
A much needed boost, but still a ways to go to close the gap enough to put the speed perception problem to bed. The $500 price cut on the top end model is outstanding though and makes it even more competitive with the workstation offerings from companies like Dell and Compaq.

SecureMac.com is a site devoted to Macintosh security. [mac.scripting.com]
For a long time Macs didn't have to worry too much about security. Unfortunately, with the power of Unix also comes the need to pay more attention to security.

The most exciting thing about the trip to Seattle; finding a Borders a block from the hotel that had a copy of Mac OS X: The Missing Manual. Yep, geek I am.
Definitely a book to pickup if you want to get the most out of the OS.

Patty has posted some pictures from our trip to Seattle. It started out nice and clear, didn't last long though.
