Mira - aimed at home users - won't work with XP Home
Mira device won't work with XP Home. Mira, a portable wireless flat-panel display designed by Microsoft for home users, will not be compatible with the Windows XP Home Edition, a company executive says. [CNET News.com]
You know, I was wondering about this. I have a laptop with Windows XP Home on it and I thought it strange that they would talk up this device that relied on features that weren't in the Home version of Windows XP. It's going to be interesting to hear the thud when this thing hits the market. Microsoft is truly clueless if they think people are going to buy this for the home at a price point of $500-$800. Oh of course you also have to upgrade to XP Pro too, so another $200 please.
This has flop written all over it. I feel sorry for the hardware partners that Microsoft is suckering into selling these things. I'm sure Microsoft worked it so that all the risk lies on their partners shoulders.
Hopefully by the time these start showing up on auction sites for $50, someone will have hacked them to act as remote X terminals or something. I'd buy one for that since I'm a sucker for toys, even though I doubt I'd use it that much. Tablets are a cool idea, but they just never seem to really work very well. Someday someone will figure it out, but neither Mira nor the Tablet PC really has anything substantially innovative about them to solve the problems. It's really quite pathetic.
