Berkeley DB XML
Sleepycat Software is working on a new embedded XML database. The code isn't available yet, but I suspect this will prove to be a pretty useful product. It has a C++ API and is built on the mature berkeley DB engine. It will be released under similar terms as other Sleepycat software.

10 Gb Ethernet
10-Gigabit Ethernet Standard Approved [Slashdot: News for nerds, stuff that matters]
This is an incredibly important development for people interested in distributed systems, something I have a big interest in. This will enable network speeds that well exceed the capability of most current drive systems to deliver data. Hell, this exceeds the bus speed of most current PCs and approaches the point to point back plane speed of a Sun ES10000 (1.6 GBps PtoP, 100+ GBps aggregate). This has huge possibilities for creative database design and truly alters what is possible in distributed database systems. Other then latency, the network would cease to be a bottleneck. I'm very excited to be starting research work in this area.
