In Memorium...
I sat down to read one of my favorite magazines (American Photo) and saw three words: Tribute Galen Rowell. Finding out someone you admire is gone, is always a surprise. Galen and Barbara Rowell were lost in a plane crash on August 11. They were returning home from a photo trip to the Bering Sea. With his passing, we have lost one of the greatest outdoor photographers ever. The man who defined the concept of adventure photography.
Galen Rowell was a master of light -- his images screamed of it. The perfect moment doesn't begin to explain his single minded dedication to capturing nature in all it's beauty. He was an anomaly in the sense that he used a 35mm camera all of his career. Within the limitations of the medium, he perfected a vision that was unique in it's glorification of nature. His image of Potala Palace in Tibet, is as perfect a vision as you will ever see. The story of how he made that image may be lost in this age of digital minipulation, but it says much about how he was able to connect vision to film.
He will be missed, along with his wife, for their mutual passion of the world that surrounds us, and the extremes they were willing to go to, to find that perfect place, that perfect light. We will miss your vision Galen -- though your images will live on...mj

Who Killed Farscape?
Nowadays, TV shows (and science fiction or fantasy shows in particular) get cancelled every other day. Dark Angel, Invisible Man, Witchblade -- we hardly knew ye.
But, most commonly, shows are cut down in their infancy, after one or two seasons. It's rare for an established and successful show to be cancelled, unless it has completed its narrative arc or its creators or stars want to move on.
So the SCI FI Channel's abrupt decision a few weeks ago to cancel its hit show Farscape after four seasons came as a huge shock to many. Whether you are a fan of the show or not, its abrupt cancellation raises many questions about the place of speculative fiction in the current TV climate...more [Strange Horizons]
Even if you are not a Sci-Fi fan you have to be curious as to how a successful show gets canned after the channel had stated that it had signed on for another season? This is a sad tale that leaves me with almost no desire to watch the last few episodes. I will watch, but with the taste of bitter fruit on my lips...mj
