Thinking about this communication thing we do, and how to make it all work better, innit?

Does this mean that future Macs will come with free music-making and recording software on them derived from Logic Audio, to join current free offerings iPhoto, iDVD, iTunes and iMovie?

Apple’s Xserve rackmount servers are now officially released to the market. These machines are amazing, and excellent value given the benchmarks they are achieving, as reported by MacCentral.
There is also the matter of their lack of a server tax—one licence for Unix-based Mac OS X Server is all you need for an unlimited number of clients. You don’t get that with Windows. Bill makes you pay through the nose for an insecure, problem-prone server operating system needing constant nursing by over-priced techies.
These Xserve machines will be as much at home in major corporations of any kind as Hollywood production studios, or your own firm no matter what its size or what you do.
Xserve’s real direct competition is not Windows at all in fact, but other high-end servers that run various flavours of Unix or Linux and that cost more for lower performance.

I have experienced plug-and-play on many flavours of Windows, and Mac OS X and Mac OS 9 on the Macintosh, and the Windows implementations can justifiably be renamed “plug-and-pray”. Peter Coffee of eWeek agrees in his article For Plug-and-Play, I Pick the Apple.

I dropped off one of two identical pairs of black elastic-sided RM Williams boots to have the soles repaired by the factory.
They now offer a choice of leather soles, or Neoprene. I opted for Neoprene, reputed to outlast leather by a factor of two or three.
I grew up wearing RM Williams boots, and took them for granted. I became convinced there were better things out there, and when I was a student I wore mostly Doc Martens. Each time I lived in London I bought a few pairs of Church’s shoes and boots and wore them to death, even though the quality of the last pair I bought not long before Prada bought the firm was rather disappointing.
The one brand of boots I have repeatedly returned to in between all the others, and that I have now settled on as being the best for my feet are RM Williams. Every time I wear something else these days I come to regret it. My current foot pain is at least partly attributable to a lengthy period of long walks in another brand of shoes.

I am downloading The Two Towers trailer, fullscreen version, right now. It will be done in an hour. Something to look forward to.

It is possibly the least pleasant time I have had for quite some time right now—the ’flu, right foot very painful (and I don’t quite understand how it got so damaged), permanently tired. And I’m sleeping badly. Is my body trying to tell me something?
