Dammit, yet another laudatory article in the Media supplement in today’s issue of The Australian newspaper about Allan Ball’s amazing HBO TV show Six Feet Under starring Australia’s own Rachel Griffiths.
TV reviewer Greg Callahan writes yet another positive piece about the show, on the occasion of its renewal for a third season being announced. Channel 9 in every Australian city except Perth will be broadcasting Six Feet Under’s second season from the 29th of July.
“Everyone is talking about Six Feet Under, even those who’ve never watched it. …did I mention this is arguably the most groundbreaking American television show in more than a decade?…
But if Six Feet Under likes to highlight our own mortality, it is also incredibly life-affirming, reminding us of how fear, insecurity, and religious restrictions can impoverish our short lives.
Creator and co-writer Alan Ball—best known for his Oscar-winning American Beauty screenplay—has created a TV show of sublime beauty and depth, with crisp, innovative direction, scripts as tight as a drum, and stellar performances consistently strong from week to week.”
That was my emphasis on the words sublime beauty and depth, not the author’s. My short life feels impoverished by the high-handed manner in which Channel 9 Perth has decided viewers in this city are incapable of appreciating sublime beauty and depth or stellar performances.
Shame, shame, shame, and shame on you again, Channel 9 Perth. May the ratings for the braindead piece of crap you have replaced Six Feet Under with in this city sink out of sight. That is, if the substitute show manages to attract any ratings at all.
If it ever becomes possible to subscribe to HBO on cable in this country then I would leap at the opportunity. Why? Not only is Six Feet Under an HBO program, but so is The Sopranos, Sex and the City, Oz and The Wire, and more. Then there are the films and documentaries.
