Information on the Photographic Portrait Prize announced on ABC Radio has arrived. Here are the details:
“The Art Gallery of New South Wales is pleased to announce the establishment of the Citigroup Private Bank Australian Photographic Portrait Prize.
The annual Prize, offering $15,000 prize money to the winner, will be awarded in March next year to coincide with the 2003 Archibald Prize. A selection of entries will be on display at the Art Gallery of New South Wales with the winning work.
The Prize will be open to photographers who are residents of Australia. All photographic mediums will be considered, including digital imaging and image manipulation. Entries must have been taken in the 12 months prior to the entry closing date.
A judging panel of four will be established including two Trustees of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Director of the Australian Centre for Photography and a well-known photographer.
The Art Gallery of New South Wales was fortunate to secure a sponsor with an existing interest in photography. The Citigroup Photography Prize is now in its seventh year in Britain, rewarding the photographer judged to have made the most significant contribution to photography over the previous year. Citigroup Private Bank’s sponsorship now enables the establishment of a major photography prize in Australia.
‘Photography has earned its place as a serious and respected art form in its own right,’ Citigroup Private Bank Managing Director, Jeremy Nestel said. ’The Citigroup Private Bank is proud to be a part of this development and to promote the outstanding works of both professional and aspiring Australian photographers.’
‘The idea of a photographic portrait prize has been in our sights for years—it is the most obvious and logical extension of the Archibald—that most democratic of art awards; and photography is, arguably, the most democratic of the visual arts. But it is also most subtly intrusive. We are delighted that the Citigroup Private Bank has joined with us in supporting this great initiative,’ said Edmund Capon, Director of the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
Entry forms will be available from the Art Gallery of New South Wales from October 2002. Please write or email Deborah Spek (email deborahs@ag.nsw.gov.au) for entry forms.”
