Thought for the day
Current political and media events in the UK and the US seem to
be revolving around the pretense that politics and government are (or
should be) driven by evidence.
This is, at best, a polite fiction. Governments do what they do for four reasons:
- they have the power to do something
- they want to do it
- they can get away with it
- they think it will allow them to get away with it for a bit longer
Evidence is used, but only as a tool in the service of these four reasons.
Governments, and the politicians that make them up, are not so different from the rest of us.
