A Profile of Courage
I remember in my youth, my father would have us all watch the TV show Profiles of Courage, stories about great people in difficult times. Well, I know I can add people to the list. My profile of courage is about a fellow teacher named Martha Zepeda. Martha is an examplary human being. Martha is from Pilsen, a home girl, who continues to live in Pilsen and serves her community as a Kindergarten teacher. What greater gift and love can one have for one's own community than help in the formation of our young. She is also a committed mother who strives the best for her own four children. They excell in school. Her oldest daughter is doing very well as a freshman at UIC. She is also the "go to" person in her extended family when help and support is needed. Lately, it seems her family has suffered a good number tragedies. Yesterday, she lost her cousin, who was for all practical purposes her little sister, since they were raised together. Yet, she is a pillar of strength and knows how to get things done. Martha Zepeda is my hero. She may not be profiled in the Sun Times or the Tribune yet, but you read it here first.
