Blinded by the Light

I had forgotten that there was going to be a change.

While I was at work today, little gnomes came into my apartment and spirited away the 1950s-style wide-wale venetian blinds that had been gathering dust in my windows for eight and a half years.

In their place are stylish, light mini-blinds. My whole place looks different. Actually, it's going to take some getting used to ~ but I think once I adjust, I'm going to like them. I won't know for sure until I see them by daylight. I left the old ones down and louvred open most of the time, because raising and lowering them was such a hassle. These are much easier to manage, so I'm likely to raise them altogether more often. And in my living room I can finally cover the window area on either side of the air conditioner.

The miracle in all this is that it was provided for me by the building manager out of the goodness of her heart. I didn't ask for it and I'm not having to pay for it in any way. I think that it all stems from one evening several years ago when I noticed her wrist was swollen and enquired about it. She had really bad carpal tunnel syndrome. I recommended B complex vitamin supplements and asked after her progress regularly. Ever since then we've had a very friendly, cordial relationship.

Combined with the new Graves Robin coffee table (thank you Amazon and Target) I put together last night, the new window treatments have turned my little hermitage into a swank pad! Move over Martha!

A difference that makes a difference?

I am convinced that we are more like our primate cousins, and indeed the rest of the kingdom of life, than we usually care to admit.

But if asked what I think the essential difference is between human beings and, say, chimpanzees ~ I'll say that it is only we human beings who pray.

Of course I could be wrong about that. Would we recognize the prayers of chimpanzees, orangutans, and gorillas? In the past we've often had a hard enough time hearing the prayers and seeing the humanity in others of our own species.
