No fire without Tinderbox

I never did get around to having a look at Tinderbox like I had hoped to last weekend. Soon...

Two from NASA's Earth Observatory

News: Terra Satellite Data Confirm Unusually Warm, Dry U.S. Winter. New maps of land surface temperature and snow cover produced by NASA's Terra satellite show this year's winter was warmer than last year's, and the snow line stayed farther north than normal.

Reference: Global Warming Fact Sheet.

Journal Retracts Support for Claims of Invasive GM Corn. [Scientific American] Something about this didn't seem right when it came up a few days ago, I dunno, just a feeling I had. Not that I'm that smart, but there was just something about how it was presented... Plus, in order to retain what credibility you may still have, you must retract when this sort of stuff comes to light, lest you lose what credibility remains.

Jonathon has an interesting mega-blog on Japanese writing. [Jonathon Delacour] I took Japanese language for a semester. Reading things like this make me realize I probably take it up again.

Condors' future on a cliff's edge

"The first wild California Condor chicks since 1984 could be born in weeks - it would mark a extraordinary recovery." [New Scientist] I know they're Pleistocene Megafauna and their longterm survival as a species is therefore problematic, but outisde of continental Africa, they're among the last we have on the planet.Go Conservation! Go Condors!

I Had This Little Chat With Myself

OK, remember this. Don't cut and paste into that stupid javascript 'search google' shortcut on the menu bar in Mac IE 5.1. I don't like dropping into MacsBug with no way out except 'rs'. It hoses Radio. It hoses Eudora's indexes. It hoses the TCP/IP settings. 100% reproducible. Just. Don't. Do. It.

Marijuana does not dent IQ permanently

"Heavy users who have given up cannabis perform as well as those who never smoked the drug, researchers say." [New Scientist] That is good news for, ... my college friends froma long time ago. Yeah, that's the ticket. The reality is, I have been clean and sober since 14 May, 1984. Notice I made no mention of sane and reasonable.

Myth and Folklore

Two bits of good linkage from Craig at Booknotes:
"The Encyclopedia Mythica
This is an encyclopedia on mythology, folklore, legends, and more. It contains over 6000 definitions of gods and goddesses, supernatural beings and legendary creatures and monsters from all over the world.
American Folklore
This folklore site contains retellings of American folktales, Native American myths and legends, Tall Tales, weather folklore and ghost stories from each of the 50 states. Read about famous characters such as Paul Bunyan, Pecos Bill, Jesse James, Davy Crockett, Daniel Boone and many more."
