Apple Previews Jaguar
I'm glad Apple posted a press release about [base "]Jaguar[per thou], so I can at least comment on that :-)

- iChat, Apple[base ']s new AIM-compatible instant messaging software that is built into Mac OS X and integrated with the new Mail and Address Book applications

I wonder if the "bubble" interface is customizable? If we can have bubbles, why not full-blown avatars, or just text? Also, can we plug in other IM services?

- QuickTime® 6, the first complete solution for industry standard MPEG-4 video and AAC audio streaming

I guess they've solved their licensing dilemas

- Rendezvous, Apple[base ']s proposed new industry standard for automatic discovery of computers, devices, and services on IP networks (i.e., Ethernet, AirPort®)

Ah, now this is very cool. I've been talking with some of you about how to turn iPhoto and iTunes into a server, so that I can publish my pictures or stream my music across my household... Rendezvous accomplishes this. It also works at the device level, so bring your iPod into the room, and someone can stream off it? Very cool stuff... what else can we use this for?

- Address Book, Apple[base ']s new system-wide database for managing contact information

'bout friggin time. Scott talks as if he invented the PIM space. Big duH! Will MS use this instead of their own address book? Will Apple also come out with a Calendar app, with invitations and todos? I don't think Apple is really ready to compete in this space...

- Finder[dot accent], now enhanced with spring-loaded folders and new instant searching

The Finder now finds... instant searching is very welcome! Just being faster is also welcome!

- Sherlock® 3, Apple[base ']s all-new Internet search and services tool

Looks like Apple bought or copied Watson. No surprise here... but very welcome!

- Quartz[dot accent] Extreme, the hardware accelerated Quartz graphics and compositing engine

Very beautiful screens... but I wonder what apps will really need this?

- UNIX Tools, the latest UNIX advancements including FreeBSD 4.4 updates, the new GCC 3 compiler, IPv6 and IPSec; and

YEAH! IPSec! Secure networking!

- Windows Support, for increased compatibility with Windows networks with SMB browsing and sharing as well as built-in PPTP VPN security.

I thought SMB browsing was going to be part of X 10.0, so they're just catching up here. VPN support is very welcome!
