I'm putting together a book called "ProShare Dev, the serious business of shareware development". It will include company profiles and founder interviews of the top shareware developers, with the goal of articulating the business propositions available in shareware.

Here's a quick list of the developers I'm looking to interview, in no particular order:
  • Brian Greenstone

  • Thorsten Lemke

  • Dan Wood

  • Justin Wood

  • Brent Simmons

  • Andrew Welch

  • The questions will focus on the business of shareware development, like:
  • How do you describe your "day job"?

  • When and how did you decide to be a shareware developer?

  • Is it sustainable? is it profitable?

  • How is online software sales different from retail sales?

  • Describe your business structure in broad terms

  • The interesting angle for me is, how do these shareware developers fit into the business structures I'm learning in my BS Business/Marketing degree... For example:
  • Dow do these authors approach the Cn4Ps in marketing?

  • How does their business break down into the value-chain components?

  • How does the "use now, maybe pay later" model fit into the sales cycle?

  • How do they promote their software to customers?

  • What is the buyer behavior of shareware customers?

  • how formal is the market research when considering new products?

  • Thoughts? Send me an email
