Data corruption persists

Data corruption persists on my PowerBook, and feels quite reminiscent of my hardware troubles of last year at this same time. It's almost like the Apple PowerBook computer can't deal with San Francisco summers, which often don't start until August, and peak in September. I've lost another week's worth of email, and must fall back on a copy I made before our Maui trip. The last thing I did before quitting entourage was move all my inbox items to my .Mac account, so at least I still have those. I then bought Drive 10 and ran it while I visited with Paulette and Jackson. Drive 10 reported no problems, so I can only assume that the problems are now strictly Entourage-specific.

Bummer.

I need to revamp my backup strategy. Now that my PB HD is larger than my external drive, I only keep a copy of my home directory in backup. I can re-install my applications and OS if needed, but that would surely be more painful than a restore from a full back-up image.

Grey Hairs
It's becoming official. I'm a grey hair now. I've got several towards the front of my scalp, and several on my chin. :-(

DotCom Lessons
Paulette vigorously pointed out this story in the paper a few weeks ago. I still haven't read it, partly because I fear I'll empathize far too much!

The New York Times offers "lessons" from the "dot-com experience" in a Sunday article by Claudia Deutsch.

* Being a Luddite is bad, but being a technophile can be worse.
* There is a difference between red tape and necessary procedures.
* Speed can connote efficiency as well as recklessness.
* Employee loyalty isn't an outdated concept.
* It is often easy to do more with less.
* The Internet may not be a great business model, but it is a great business tool.
* Managers must value e'lan and encourage optimism.

My own experiences, post dotcom bubble, back this up. While I feel successful in my last venture, there is still one success that eludes me: the freedom to try again without worry. Then again, if there was no worry, I might dive into ventures that have little hope of success.
