Jenny the Librarian - HAPLR Index

A while back fans of the Denver Public Library were giddy over the news the DPL ranked number one in the country for library systems serving cities of 500,000 or more. Jenny the Librarian is pointing to the HAPLR Index with all the statistics for you number junkies. Congratulations DPL, and especially the overworked IT staff.

Larry Sherrill - Antenna

My good friend Larry Sherrill started a month off between jobs today. He's been working at a web company for a good long while and decided to try something new. He spent the first day of his break using State Charts to model UI's for small devices and checking out Antenna for J2ME. What could be more fun?

Jeremy Allaire - RSS-Data

Dave Winer is pointing to Jeremy Allaire:

Jeremy Allaire proposes a new format called RSS-Data. He and I have been talking about this for several months. I think it's a good idea. The challenge will be to get it done without getting mired in working-group-itis. [Scripting News]

2004 Presidential Election

A Curious Stranger reminds people to contribute to someone before the filing deadline yesterday. I did. He also asked Bush supporters to wait a day to file. Candidates get Federal matching funds based on collecting at least $5,000 is each of 20 states. The Stranger is suggesting that undecided doners consider Wesley Clark.

Wesley Clark was interviewed by Josh Marshall yesterday. Clark says In the interview, "I taught economics at West Point, I taught political philosophy." That's cool.

Denver November 2003 Election

Monday is the last day to register to vote in the November election.

Amendment 33 is the subject of this story from the Rocky Mountain News [October 1, 2003, "Effort to put video lottery in racetracks is a gamble"]. From the article, "Since voters approved small- stakes casinos in three once-roaring mining camps in 1990, they have resoundingly voted down attempts in 1992, 1994 and 1996 to permit casinos in about 30 other communities, including Denver. No casino question has appeared on the statewide ballot since 1996. Still, in 2000, voters approved adding the multistate Powerball game to the Colorado Lottery 52 percent to 48 percent."

Here's a story from the Rocky [October 1, 2003, "Gambling amendment berated"] about opposition to Amendment 33. From the story, "She (Commerce City Councilwoman, Tracey Snyder) worries that public schools near the dog track could be affected and that local residents won't even have the right to vote to override the plan if voters statewide approve it" The Rocky also lists some of the history of gambling in Colorado.

2003 Denver Mayoral Transition

Update: The chat is Friday afternoon not Thursday as reported on Gil Asakawa's blog.

Yesterday on his weblog Gil Asakawa wrote, "Here's how cool the Internet is: You can connect directly with celebrities and people in positions that you nromally would never be able to talk to. It's possible because of online chats, and DenverPost.com is proud to bring you these interactive opportunities. We're just getting started with our chats, but we've already booked a good one for this Thursday: Mayor John Hickenlooper, the businessman-from-nowhere-turned-political-winner." Here's the link to the Denver Post Chat site. I'll be there, Gil and John, look for the handle CoyoteGulch. Oh yeah, I'll take a late lunch that day so I'm not goofing off on the job.

The Mayor promised during the election that his would be a different, more open, administration. I'm pretty sure that no Denver official has ever met with constituents in a public chat room.

Update: The chat application does not work in Safari. I created my account there but ... I'm using Mozilla for the Mac for the chat this afternoon.

I tested logging in and creating an account with Safari on my Mac and Mozilla on my Linux box. The app seems to work in both environments. Thanks for showing an inclusive attitude Post. Gil, lose the "Hickzonner" and "Hick" nicknames. They're disrespectful. I hope the mayor doesn't choose one of them as his chat handle.
