Denver November 2003 Election

Here's an editorial urging voters to reject Initiative 101 from the Denver Post [October 11, 2003, "Chill out, then vote 'no']. From the editorial, "We won't judge the proponents' claims that, 'According to a promising theory, the root cause of all forms of violence, including warfare and terrorism, is social stress,' that the economic benefit of a stress-free city 'would be over $80 million annually' or that transcendental meditation by large groups can cut crime. Suffice it to say that a city struggling to patch the potholes, keep enough cops on the streets, reform its personnel system, care for the mentally ill and the uninsured and balance the budget probably has more pressing things to do than trying to change human nature. Vote 'no,' with gentleness in your heart, and after you've voted, take a nice walk down to the post office and mail your ballot."

Bob Ewegen weighs in on Referendum A in his column in today's Denver Post [October 11, 2003, "The year of strange bedfellows"]. He would like to see the referendum passed and points out some inconsistencies in the arguments of opponents.

Al Knight is urging voters to approve Amendment 33 in his column in Wednesday's Denver Post [October 11, 2003, "Longing for a hypocrisy meter"]. From the column, "The measure is being opposed by an improbable collection of interests that includes the existing casinos, those generally opposed to gambling, and some who just want to protect their pet projects currently funded by state-sponsored gambling. It's no surprise that the arguments against the amendment are therefore inconsistent and contradictory."

Denver Charter Changes for the November 2003 Ballot

Question 1A is the subject of this discussion from the Rocky Mountain News [October 11, 2003, "Changing the rules]. Linda Seebach is the moderator and the participants are Kathleen MacKenzie, President Pro Tem of City Council and Dan Brown from Denver International Airport. From the discussion, "MacKenzie: 'I think Mr. Brown is unnecessarily worried about the fate of city employees under this charter amendment. I think it provides as much protection for the merit system as in the existing charter, but it allows the city and city employees to have the freedom for creating a better system. I think it's a great thing for Denver.' Brown: 'And we don't. And we think that the citizens of Denver need to look closely at how this has moved decision-making from an independent board following solid personnel principles to the City Council and the mayor, and how this will create a less-than-good system much like we had before.'"
