Denver November 2003 Election

The Rocky Mountain News [October 2, 2003, "Stress measure pushes quack science"] is urging voters to turn down the opportunity to pass Initiative 101. From the editorial, "If you're tempted to vote for this measure just because it makes you feel all warm and fuzzy, check out the source - and the accuracy - of the claim. Though you can't tell from the ballot title alone, the ordinance it refers to - which initiative sponsor Jeff Peckman has made available online through a link at safetythroughpeace.org - makes clear that the ideas behind the initiative originated in the book Permanent Peace: How To Stop Terrorism and War - Now and Forever. Author Robert Oates was commissioned to write the book by the Institute of Science, Technology and Public Policy, headed by former physicist John Hagelin, Natural Law Party candidate for president in 2000 and a leading advocate of the power of Transcendental Meditation."

The advertising campaign around Amendment 33 is the subject of this article from the Rocky Mountain New [October 2, 2003, "Ad Watch: It's either-oar on 33"]. From the article, "River rafting is a whole lot prettier than slot machines. And that, analysts say, is why the river-rafting television ad aired by backers of Amendment 33 emphasizes the millions of dollars it would produce for tourism promotion, while the way the money would be raised is never mentioned." The Rocky also has an analysis of the Anti-33 ad and the Pro-33 ad.
