Colorado Water
Denver Water is dumping over 3 million gallons of treated water into a storm sewer every week, according to the Rocky Mountain News [July 23, 2004, "Utility dumping water"]. Oops. From the article, "At the end of a dirt road, in an overgrown field, a fire hydrant at 28600 E. 114th Ave. gushes 300 gallons of Denver water every minute, a News 4 investigation has found...News 4 learned the water dumping has gone on nonstop for nearly a decade. The Water Department says it's unavoidable...Denver Water says the problem is a Catch-22 that began around the time DIA opened in 1995. The airport's fuel depot was located several miles north of the terminal. Denver Water says it needed to run two 30-inch water mains past the fuel depot for fire suppression in the event of a fuel fire. At the same time, there are only a handful of users tapping into those lines. When the water doesn't circulate, chlorine content drops and the water can quickly become "stale" and fall below state drinking water standards. Consequently, Denver Water must force the water to circulate by flushing it out of the system 24 hours a day, seven days a week"

2004 Presidential Election
John Kerry and John Edwards are here in Colorado today. They will be starting their trek to the Democratic National Convention in Aurora, according to the Rocky Mountain News [July 23, 2004, "From the cradle to the capital"]. From the article, "John Forbes Kerry was born at Fitzsimons on Dec. 11, 1943, while his father - an Army test pilot - received treatment for tuberculosis. The family returned to Massachusetts in March 1944 when Kerry was 3 months old. The presidential candidate plans to return to the building today with his family for a private tour before a public rally that will begin his trek to the Democratic National Convention in Boston - a campaign that will take the candidate (in the words of his campaign) 'from his birthplace to the birthplace of America.'" Here's the coverage from the Denver Post [July 23, 2004, "Democratic duo greeted by whistles, applause at DIA"].
If you're planning to go to the Kerry/Edwards rally TalkLeft reports that the event has been moved to the "The Fillmore Auditorium in Denver. (1510 Clarkson Street). Gates open at 10 a.m."
Taegan Goddard: "New Hampshire - Kerry 50%, Bush 45% (Granite State Poll)."
Update: Dave Winer has created an RSS aggregator for all of the bloggers at the Democratic National Convention. What a great idea. Bryan Bell's design is nice and clean. Well done fellows.

Denver November 2004 Election
Here's an in-depth look at John Walsh from the Rocky Mountain News [July 23, 2004, "Fresh face may be too fresh"]. He's running for Denver District Attorney. Denver's next D.A. will be determined on August 10th in the Democratic primary because there are no Republicans running.
Here's an article from the Rocky Mountain News about the U.S. Senate primary contests [July 23, 2004, "A tangle of question marks"].
Mike Miles and Bob Schaffer are tapping the energy of grassroots supporters, according to the Denver Post editorial staff [July 23, 2004, "The roots of Senate campaigns"]. From the editorial, "More than three weeks before the primary election, a clutch of Mike Miles supporters stood on a Denver street corner in a driving rain to wave signs for their candidate. In the dark, early-morning hours before the Republican state convention, dozens of Bob Schaffer's followers jammed red, white and blue yard signs along every stretch of road heading into the meeting site. Miles and Schaffer are running ideologically opposite campaigns for U.S. Senate, but both have tapped the unbridled spirit of grassroots supporters. It's their only shot to challenge their well-heeled establishment opponents."
Update: Take a look at the fine website created by the proponents of Initiative 100. Straightforward navigation. They have a photo of Jane Goodall who has endorsed the intiative. You can see her listed on the endorsements page.
