Community Weblogs

Jay Rosen: "If you care about such things, there's a recognition moment underway right now among the bloggers in Greensboro, North Carolina, and the strange thing is we can follow it, even though it's a very local thing -- meaning bound to a particular plot of earth, which is also a place in the American South."

Ed Cone, who's in the middle of the bloggers in Greensboro, has a post on the subject today. He writes, "Another element is that our daily newspaper has gotten in the game -- but done so with respect for the local community, not just out of a desire to dominate it."

Coyote Gulch encourages the Rocky and the Post to make sure that links do not go stale. That would be way cool.

Colorado Water

The feds have given the 7 Colorado River Compact states until April 1st to come up with a plan to share the Colorado River shortages, according to the Rocky Mountain News [December 18, 2004, "Water, time drying up"]. The short timeline plays into the hands of districts that have junior water rights since they are given a status equal to the oldest water claims. Pat Mulroy from the Las Vegas area is probably dancing a jig. The Rocky quotes Mulroy as saying, "It's easier to absorb a shortage if you have partners to share in the pain." It's also easier if you ignore prior water rights and threaten a solution from the feds that'll undoubtedly favor political cronies.

Here's the link to the Colorado River Water Users Association website.
