Colorado Water

Rate hikes might be the result of the conservation effort by customers of Denver Water, according to the Rocky Mountain News [July 15, 2004, "Tapping into water costs"]. If only we'd kept our lawns green. From the article, "As of July, Denver Water customers have used 36 percent less water since May 1 than the historical average, said Ed Pokorney, manager of planning...In 2004, projected revenue from water sales will drop from from $155 million to $129 million because of conservation efforts...Denver Water on Wednesday postponed expansion of a water recycling plant to transform wastewater into a non-drinkable supply for lawn watering at the Lowry and Stapleton redevelopment projects. Putting off the $14 million construction project until 2006-07, originally planned for 2005-2006, will help with the budget shortfall, said Jon Diebel, director of engineering...Mountain reservoir storage has peaked at 85 percent - far higher than expected after three consecutive years of low snowfall"
