Here's the third article in the Rocky's series on water use and conservation in Colorado, dealing with water rates [July 5, 2005, "Living with less but paying more"]. They write, "Water rates have soared in Colorado in the past four years as utilities have scrambled to cover drought-related declines in sales and to buy more of the much- sought-after liquid. Monthly service charges have jumped an average of 25 percent, basic water-use fees are up 9 percent, and fees for high-volume water use have surged 56 percent on average, according to a 10-city survey on water rates conducted by the Rocky Mountain News."
The Rocky Mountain News is running a story about the imminent demise of a 100 year old ditch system in North Boulder [July 5, 2005, "In the trenches over a ditch"]. From the article, "The Silver Lake Ditch spread a green carpet across the arid northwest quadrant of this city in the late 19th century. Now city officials and residents are embroiled in a dispute over whether the 117-year-old irrigation system is worth preserving in an age of computer-controlled sprinklers and municipal water mains."
