Reuse of wastewater has good potential for helping solve supply problems, according to the Rocky Mountain News [July 30 2005, "Water reuse seen as way to stretch resource"]. From the article, "Denver Water spent $100 million on a water-recycling plant, and plumbing systems for City Park, Washington Park and the housing developments at Lowry and Stapleton use recycled water, said Chips Barry, manager of Denver Water. About 45 percent of Denver's water supply comes from the Western Slope and can be reused, he said. Denver's reuse system is the second largest in the nation behind Phoenix."
Municipalities like Parker are hoping to mix treated wastewater with supplies for retreatment according to Frank Jaeger. He plans to pipe wastewater into Rueter-Hess reservoir for retreatment. This, of course, obivates the need for separate plumbing systems.
