Is Colorado a swing state this election cycle? Diane Carman's column today, in the Denver Post, looks at the question [June 20, 2004, "Stepford voters may get a fight"]. From her column, "Growing numbers of Colorado veterans are campaigning for Sen. John Kerry. Voter registration drives are targeting Hispanic neighborhoods. Democrat Ken Salazar is polling 10 points ahead in the race for the open U.S. Senate seat. And even Frances Owens, once considered a perfectly programmed Republican gubernatorial wife, has ditched the adoring gaze this time around. Unlike 2000, when George W. Bush had a lock on Colorado, Wednesday's revised Cook Political Report describes the state as merely leaning his way. Face it, all you Democrats and independents who have been waiting for a chance to cast a vote that matters, we're just an effective political ad away from becoming a toss-up state - which would mean the end of candidate indifference and being taken for granted."
