The Salazar brother's success is due to their ability to reach out to rural voters according to the Rocky Mountain News [November 5, 2004, "Rural roots appeal"]. Click on the graphic to see a county map of the presidential race (thanks to Eric for the link). Electoral-vote.com has a larger county graphic today.

Republicans are searching for the people responsible for them losing control of the Colorado legislature, according to the Rocky Mountain News [November 5, 2004, "The U.S. Senate race? A killer. The state Senate? Well, Republicans had only a one-seat advantage and they knew it could go either way. The 3rd Congressional District? A heart-breaker.Drubbing prompts GOP finger-pointing"]. From the article, "But losing the state House? Impossible. When that happened - and by three, count 'em, three seats - Colorado Republicans realized they had gotten an old-fashioned thumping not seen in the state for close to 50 years. They admit they were in total shock on election night...There has been some quiet finger- pointing among Republicans. Some wonder whether Owens was so focused on Bush's re-election that he got blindsided. Others question Halaby's operation at the state party. There's the contingent that believes (Sean) Tonner & Co. didn't run a sharp Senate campaign. And still others point to the GOP get-out-the-vote effort and wonder whether it was as successful as it could have been."
