we are underused:In Russian author Victor Pelevin's "Homo Zapiens," "zapping" is defined as "the rapid switching of a television from one channel to another, which is used to avoid watching the advertisements." Since "instantaneous and unpredictable technomodifications switch the actual viewer to and fro," the viewer becomes "a remotely controlled television program," or, a homo zapien. protecting Disney's bottom line: "On Oct. 27, 1998, President Clinton, urged on by a Disney Corp. mindful that its Mickey Mouse copyright was about to expire, passed a law that extended copyright protection for an additional 20 years. Eldred and Bjorklund were outraged. In their view, the Sonny Bono Copyright Extension Act harmed the public by retroactively taking information from the public domain and putting it back under the control of copyright holders. Corporations would benefit, but small publishers and the general public, they argued, would suffer."

I don't think I'll ever get tired of this story. According to Lawrence Lessig's The Future of Ideas, there's no concrete evidence linking Disney directly w/this copyright extension bullshit, but it sure seems like a convenient coincidence that congress started extending copyright about the exact same time Disney's control of Mickey was about to expire, and then has continued to pass extension acts every few years since. Maybe Mickey has nothing to do with it. Doesn't matter. The point is: extending copyright indefinitely will not only impoverish society, but eventually it will impoverish the corporate interests who currently benefit because copyright, by definition, stifles innovation and creativity.  9:10:46 AM      comment
