The Rational Edge: Introduction to Business Modeling Using the Unified Modeling Language (UML)

"...it is crucial for an IT team to have descriptions of the business that allow them to make informed decisions. They need an unambiguous description of how the business looks that specifies where the value and cost factors are associated. A good business model provides a software-independent description of the business processes to be automated, thereby promoting a good understanding of priorities and risks prior to technology selection."

I'm trying to figure out the rigor needed for a business system migration project. Basically, migrating from an old platform to a new platform. With enhanced functionality, such as web-based, domain specific processes (instead of home-grown). Do I need to do a Business Model?

As usual, my problem is having lots of information but not knowing exactly how to organize it so it communicates the project to business and technical folks alike. Oy.
