And you thought the uproar over PhotoShopped photos was bad.
The Cartoonist points to an article about a portrait of England's Queen, Elizabeth Windsor, by painter Lucien Freud. The painting, shown at left, is in Freud's normal style and looks just like the Queen to my eye, has created a storm of criticism and scorn.
Ugly portraits, however, are Freud's thing. At right is a portrait of fellow painter David Hockney. Notice the similarities between the two paintings, especially around the mouth and chin - they are the same. Unless this look is a British trait, which I doubt, it is obvious that Freud has a particular portraiture style. I'm sure that Elizabeth knew full well whom she had comissioned to paint her.
By the way, Hockney, who usually doesn't do ugly pictures, retaliated with this drawing of Leucian Freud:
