Paul also points to this Thomas Niemann's everything site for digital photography (and throws me a bone - thanks!) Neimann's site is very dense information. Give yourself a some time to work through all the information presented in this seemingly endless instructional website.

Fortunately, for those of us who are deliberately illiterate, Neimann's site points to Russell Brown's Tips and techniques. Brown has replaced all that reading with snappy and nerdly humorous, yet 100% clear Quicktime videos that detail several Photoshop methods that fall within the realm photographic manipulations.

The Javascript batch processor called Dr. Brown's Image Processor and techniques for multi-layer sharpening and a monochrome conversion are especially suited for photographic manipulation. In ten minutes of sitting back, just watching the screen, I have seven new tchniques to try. Check this out!
Photographers Illiah Borg and Peter Dove are developing software which will include demosaicing algorithms not available today's state of the art RAW file converters, including (presumably) an increased resolution monochrome mode.
Black and white digital photography is certainly advancing through new software techniques.
