Poincaré Conjecture Solved?

Rumor has it that M.J. Dunwoody proof of the Poincaré Conjecture is correct and it will soon be accepted for publication. I am surprised at the speed of acceptance, so I will keep my doubts until further proof is available. Here is ABC News take on the subject. The article is written by John Allen Paulos.

Here's a last take on Pim from me.  Pim was a neo-liberal...[John Robb's Radio Weblog]

I don't like labels... They sound like a trick to me. I agree with a lot of what neo-liberals say, I agree with a lot of what Pim said. But I do not agree with everything any group or person says... I think labels are a trap to avoid using common sense. If I say something with social contest then I am a leftist that want the state to run everything, if I support free markets then I am a neo-liberal and support the most extreme forms of globalization

Weblogs covered the story of Pim Fortuyn's death better than the major media.  It wasn't even close.  Adam Curry's weblog provided the best insight into what Pim stood for, why he was killed, and what his death means.  The major media, across the board (I read most of the articles the major pubs ran), failed to do the research they claim to do.  The articles were on the whole reflexive, opinionated, and just plain wrong.   Here is Adam's take on the whole mess:  The Big Lie. What Pim Fortuyn really stood for

[From National Review]

PIM'S PLATFORM IN ENGLISH: [Rod Dreher] Man, that didn't take long. Reader Brian Hoffman sends a link along, courtesy of the site of Rory "Angry Clam" Miller. Thanks guys. Now, reader, check this out and see if it sounds like right-wing extremism to you: "Positions of List Pim Fortuyn."

Amazing! Does this:

It is incomprehensible that the Ministry of Justice arrests an honest Turkish tailor and hard-working Polish asparagus planters, but does not set foot in criminal neighbourhoods.
Sound anti-immigration to you? How about this?
Large groups in the community are lagging behind in social and cultural terms. These groups often originate from countries which did not participate in the Judeo-Christian-humanist developments which have been taking place in Europe for centuries. These shortfalls in development are highly regrettable, as they result in a divide in society and form a threat to the functioning of our large cities. This must be tackled vigorously, on the one hand by paying extra attention to housing, schools and cultural education for these groups, but on the other by requiring these groups to make a maximum effort themselves. Cultural developments which are diametrically opposed to the desired integration and emancipation, such as arranged marriages, honour revenge and female circumcision, must be fought by means of legislation and public information. Discrimination against women in fundamentalist Islamic circles is particularly unacceptable. In a democratic society like ours, all citizens have the same rights and obligations, irrespective of race, gender, beliefs and nature. There is a division of Church and State in the Netherlands, and therefore also of mosque and state. Thanks to the division of powers (the executive, legislative and judiciary powers), citizens can develop themselves in relative freedom. Our hard-fought freedoms are worth protecting against increasing fundamentalism. We must carry out a study into whether the introduction of a social and military service for boys and girls of eighteen years of age or older can contribute to integration.
How about this? Does it reminds you of Le Pen?
The European Union is a phenomenal experiment, which has contributed a great deal to peace in our part of the world, which for many centuries was dominated by wars. The EU has contributed a great deal to the prosperity of its member states. Support for the EU among the population could be further increased by reducing the bureaucracy of Brussels. The operation of the European parliament will be critically analysed, the control function could also be exercised by a senate composed of delegates from the national parliaments. The LPF is in favour of the EU, but with retention of our country's own identity and, wherever possible, of its own sovereignty. The principle of subsidiarity shall be the guiding factor. New member states will only be permitted to join after the Dutch people have been given their say in a politically binding referendum in the matter. This will ensure that the politicians are forced to examine carefully the benefits and disadvantages of expansion of the EU.
The media has really misstated Fortuyn positions. I am angry now.

Is business the purpose of our civilization, or does civilization have some other purpose that business supports? [Scripting News]

No, the purpose of civilization is to produce art and science. Period.

Sharon Will Weigh Military Response to Suicide Bombing. The options are said to range from a renewed occupation of key West Bank towns to a large military operation in the Gaza Strip. By Steven Erlanger. [New York Times: NYT HomePage]

Adam Curry on Pim Fortuyn assassination. Excellent article. Adam's tagline is "There are no secrets, only information you don't know yet". I always felt it was close to my tagline "Truth will triumph in the end... after everybody has left". Mine is more pessimistic, which reminds me of John Robb's tagline "No sense being pessimistic. It wouldn't work anyway" and Dave's "It's even worse than it appears".
I felt that all in the end points out to a kind of desperation. Not with the real world, but with the common perception of it. This perception is created by the news media, which we know is imprecise and wrong when they deal with subjects we are experts on, in my case mathematics, and we suspect they are even worse in other subjects. Weblogs are the greatest way to combat this perception, people talking to people, will share a light on things...

Bomber Kills Self in Botched Explosion. A suicide bomber blew himself up at a road junction near the northern port city of Haifa today, killing himself but causing no other casualties. By The Associated Press. [New York Times: International]  Another bomb went off last night killing 15.  It seems that Israel's military action gained nothing -- as predicted in this weblog.  Additionally, there was an interesting spot on 60 minutes last Sunday on Israel's refuseniks -- a growing group of soldiers that refuse to serve on the West Bank and Gaza to defend settlements.  The BBC defence correspondent follows a similar train of thought.  He even quotes Martin Van Creveld (my guru on all things Asymmetric). [John Robb's Radio Weblog]

Actually, it's the withdrawal what doesn't seem to be working. Basically, the ill-named civilized world has told the palestinians that they can continue with their act of terrorism against Israel and Israel can't defend itself against them, because the whole world will protest. Leaders that do not abide by this irrational behavior, like Pim Fortuyn, just get killed...
